Heritage open days at Park Hill
This month, the fantastic volunteers in the Park Hill Residents Association (PHRA) took visitors around the growing community as part of the Heritage Open Days event. Here Jonathan Kaplan, resident of Park Hill and Heritage Tour coordinator of the PHRA tells us more.
In September, we hosted 120 visitors across eight free tours as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days. Such was the level of interest, all the tours sold out within 24 hours and were heavily oversubscribed, with large waiting lists ready to take advantage of any cancellations.
Taking in all completed phases of the redevelopment, attendees traversed the Streets in the Sky and enjoyed the expansive views. They heard about the history of Park Hill, its architectural features and what it is like living here today, including an opportunity to see inside a city-facing flat. And those visiting on the midweek evenings were fortunate to conclude their tours by witnessing our beautiful sunsets.
Amongst the visitors, we were pleased to welcome some former residents, who reminisced about their time living here, as well as current residents wanting to find out more about their home. In contrast, for nearly half of the attendees, this was their first visit to Park Hill. 97% of them rated the tour Very Good or Excellent so hopefully Park Hill has gained some new admirers and changed perceptions of those possibly hesitant to visit previously.
Another satisfying outcome was that half of the visitors reported that they made use of either South Street Kitchen or Park Hill Provisions which demonstrates that the tours made a positive contribution to our local economy.
We received some fantastic feedback from the events with one guest calling it “a very interesting and interactive tour and talk” while another said: “having been interested in the building all my life… it was good to learn more about it!”
