Urban Splash Newsplash - June 2023
Welcome to our June edition of Newsplash - a round-up of all things Urban Splash, featuring new homes, scheme launches, commercial news and much more.
This month, we kick off with news of two recent RIBA awards for Port Loop in Birmingham and Avro in Manchester. There’s more anecdotes from contributors to our US30 anniversary series, including some insight from RIBA president Simon Allford. We've also got details of new openings at Royal William Yard, where a packed schedule of summer events will be kicking off soon. Read on to find out more.
Two RIBA Awards for our Urban Splash places
Two of our Urban Splash places were among the winners of the 2023 RIBA Awards. Awarding Port Loop in Birmingham, judges noted the “ambitious” scheme has “the potential to transform the way in which we live and interact with our neighbours”. Grade II Listed Avro in Manchester also won an award, with judges commenting the restoration had allowed the “charming, warm-toned original industrial features to shine through”. See the full list of our 474 awards on the link below.
Looking to the future
We’ve appointed former RIBA North Director Suzy Jones as our first ever Director of the Future – an appointment she says will help shape “a more equitable, appropriate and resilient sector”. Suzy will be responsible for developing our vision, pioneering new ideas for our pipeline of 4,500 new homes and 500,000 sq ft of commercial space in the next five years.
US30: “They live by design”
As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we’ve invited more friends of Urban Splash to share their stories. This month we hear from RIBA President Simon Allford who talks about our approach to design; “they have designed everything they can lay their hands on” he says, adding “they are ambitious… they make designs that accommodate the very different lives lived by the mass of very different people that pass by, through and reside in the cities in which they work”. Other great reads this month include author Andy Spinoza’s hazy memories of early 90s Manchester and Suzy Jones’ plans for the future.

Concrete Communities
We were thrilled to support the first ever Concrete Communities event in Sheffield last month. Designers, architects, and journalists gathered to celebrate and debate the brutalist icon Park Hill. The panel included Urban Splash colleagues alongside Mikhail Riches – the architects behind the retrofit of Park Hill Phase 2 as well as over industry professionals. Find out more about Park Hill on the link below.
An exciting summer in Plymouth
There’s an exciting summer ahead at Royal William Yard in Plymouth; The Steel Brew Co. recently relaunched a microbrewery in Mills Bakery, while the much-anticipated Everyman Cinema is now open at the Yard’s Melville building. Plus, there’s a packed schedule of summer events for residents and visits to look forward to.
Home of the month:
Apartment 27, Derwent House
Derwent House is a Grade II Listed icon in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. This 60 sq m, one-bedroom duplex apartment is packed with original features; it’s fully furnished and in a great location – just ten minutes from Snow Hill Station, and a few steps away from an array of independent cafes, live music venues, and wine, homeware, and vintage retailers.
Workspace of the month:

Set in the liveliest part of Manchester, this first-floor commercial multi-use space at Richmond Street overlooks Canal Street, part of the infamous Gay Village. The unit itself is one of three floors, each containing kitchens and toilets along with stair and lift access to each. It’s bursting with original features such as exposed brickwork, beams, and pillars.
