Changing the Northern Quarter
One of our first projects in Manchester, we transformed Smithfield Building into loft apartments as well as 21 ground floor and basement retail units which became home to some Manchester institutions.
Smithfield Building is located right in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter and pre-development was most famous as home to Affleck and Brown - the department store known as the Harrods of the North. We transformed it into 81 loft apartments and 21 ground floor and basement commercial spaces which were ultimately filled with a rich and diverse mix of shops, restaurants and bars.

Meet the designer
stephenson STUDIO
Established in 1979 by Roger Stephenson OBE, stephenson STUDIO is an architectural and urban design practice born in Manchester. They have a long track record of creating inspiring buildings and spaces, and have spent the last 38 years designing the urban renaissance of the North West (some would say they are among the few who started it).
Their philosophy and architectural ethos has resulted in the practice winning more than 150 national awards for architecture, and they have extensive experience of working with buildings of historical significance, like Avro.
