Anchors down as first hoUSes land at Smith's Dock
The transformation of Smith’s Dock in North Shields, a development by joint venture partners Places for People and Urban Splash, became a closer reality today, as the first homes were delivered to the site.
Created in factory environments, these unique modular homes made their way to the North East on trucks traveling up the M1. Known as hoUSe, the customisable properties, which are available in sizes of up to 1,500 sq ft, will now be installed onto their designated floorplates on site. They will complete, ready for Smith’s Dock’s first residents in spring 2017.
Urban Splash’s director of residential sales Guy Ackernley explained: “When we launched our vision for Smith’s Dock with Places for People last month, we gave the community a teaser of what these homes would look like. It’s so exciting to now have the first of them on site and bring those plans to life.
“This method of development is fast becoming the norm; modular properties are great news for buyers as it means an accelerated development process - people will actually be here living in these plots in a few month’s time.”
The hoUSes – situated on area of site known as the Plateau – are just one element of Smith’s Dock; the historic former shipyard will feature a further 800 homes – 80 waterfront apartments have already been granted planning permission – workspaces, watersports, retail areas and public parks.
Added Places for People’s Group Director, Placemaking and Regeneration, Mary Parsons: “The excitement since launch has continued and we know people remain very keen to see what’s going to be created here. These hoUSes are a wonderful, tangible demonstration of the great ideas we’re bringing to North Shields.”
The news comes soon after Places for People was named Residential Company of the Year at the Estates Gazette Awards and Building’s Housebuilder of the Year. The judges commended Places for People's placemaking approach, which was described as a blueprint for how housing providers could help solve the UK's housing crisis. The company also recently won five Placemaking and Planning awards, including three for its development of Park Hill in partnership with Urban Splash.
