        Press release - 7 April 2025

Completed apartments and a new hub for Civic Square at Port Loop in Birmingham

        07 April 2025

The partners behind the regeneration of Port Loop in Birmingham have today announced significant new updates from the site – including the completion of a new apartment building, and a new future for the Tubeworks.

Award-winning regeneration company Urban Splash and partners Places for People – the UK’s largest social enterprise – have already delivered three phases of houses at Port Loop, transforming this former industrial site into a thriving new canalside community. All of the houses in these phases are now complete and occupied, alongside a one-acre public park.

Today, the partners gathered on site to mark the completion of a further residential phase – 58 well-designed two-bedroom apartments in Mansion House – a new apartment typology for Port Loop overlooking the canal.

Guy Ackernley of Urban Splash, Martin Edwards of Places for People, and Kim Essop of Urban Splash

Guy Ackernley is Managing Director - Development and Residential at Urban Splash and said: “We’re incredibly proud of the progress at Port Loop, somewhere that’s fast become a fantastic place to visit and live in. With the completion of Mansion House, we’re offering even more choice for buyers, including affordable homes that help make canalside living accessible to a wider community.”

In a second announcement, the partners confirmed that longstanding collaborators CIVIC SQUARE has acquired 48,000 sq ft of space within Tubeworks – a collection of historic industrial buildings within the heart of the Masterplan totalling a 100,000 sq ft. Building on over five years of organising with the neighbourhood, and more than 15 years in the wider city – from festivals to neighbourhood supper clubs – CIVIC SQUARE will use the space to co-create spaces, tools and resources for people to organise in their homes, streets and neighbourhoods around regenerative climate, social and economic transitions , including a café and community kitchen, microfactory, and a creative programme.

Tom Bloxham of Urban Splash, Immy Kaur of CIVIC SQUARE, Adam Willetts of Urban Splash and Indi Kaur, CIVIC SQUARE

Imandeep Kaur is a co-founder of CIVIC SQUARE and said: “After many years of organising in the city and in Ladywood, and leaving our previous home in Digbeth, Impact Hub Birmingham. We’re thrilled to make Tubeworks and Ladywood our long-term home. This site offers us an incredible opportunity to build on the amazing work already happening in our neighbourhoods as well as bring to life in so much of the possibility, wisdom and imagination in our community. . CIVIC SQUARE seeks to continue to co-create bold, inspiring and imaginative spaces to come together, learn, build, repair, connect, share and make decisions together to meet the serious challenges and incredible possibilities ahead. We can’t wait to welcome more people through the doors in the years ahead.”

The latest announcements mark another milestone for Port Loop, with 163 homes now complete. The partners also confirmed the much-anticipated reopening of the Floating Front Room – a beloved community café on a canal barge – later this month.

Nilam Buchannan, Regional Managing Director at Places for People, concluded: “Port Loop is a true success story of regeneration.

“Working collaboratively, we’ve created a place where people want to live and connect. With more homes, affordable options, and community-focused spaces like Tubeworks, we’re ensuring that Port Loop continues to flourish as a vibrant and inclusive neighbourhood.”

Homes at Mansion House are now available, with prices from £87,750 for a 30% share, as well as outright purchase options available. Find out more: urbansplash.co.uk/mansion-house-port-loop
