Smith’s Dock success recognised nationally as development wins major placemaking award
The regeneration of Smith’s Dock in North Shields has won a national placemaking award this week. The joint venture developers behind the new, waterfront neighbourhood – Places for People and Urban Splash – collected the award at the Festival of Place ‘Pineapple’ ceremony in London, with the North Shields development winning the ‘Place in Progress’ accolade.
The awards celebrate mixed-use developments of scale; all finalists were judged on how each development contributes to urban life and brings people together. Smith’s Dock was commended by the judges for: “The way it captures industrial heritage with a good fishing and boat narrative, and a nice riverside,” fighting off competition from many other UK-wide entries.
Nigel Brewer, Planning and Design Director at Places for People, commented: “It’s an honour to have Smith’s Dock recognised at a national level and we’re thrilled to have won – especially being up against such quality contenders which included Wembley Park and Battersea Power Station.
“We are creating such an exciting new neighbourhood here; we’ve already created the first houses which are all sold; we’ve now completed 80 waterfront apartments in the Smokehouses, and we recently celebrated the arrival of our first amenity – 31 The Quay restaurant – on the building’s ground floor.
“All of this is testament to the early formations of a new community – yet one which is very much wedded to the important heritage of the local area. We look forward to making announcements about our next phases very soon.”
The completed Smith’s Dock masterplan will bring more than 800 homes, workspaces, green spaces and public amenities to Smith’s Dock; currently the final homes within the Smokehouses are on sale, with prices from £125,000. They are the third residential element of Smith’s Dock to be completed.
