Smith’s Dock takes Home Regeneration Prize at 2020 Housebuilder Awards
Smith’s Dock is rounding off an eventful year with a new accolade after coming out on top in the Best Regeneration Initiative category of the 2020 Housebuilder awards.
Smith’s Dock was recognised at the Housebuilder Awards thanks to the work undertaken by joint venture partners, Places for People and Urban Splash, to transform the former Smith’s Dock shipyard into a thriving waterfront community of townhouses and apartments on the River Tyne.
In addition to taking home the Best Regeneration Initiative award, the Smokehouses were also highly commended in the Best Design Four Storeys or More category for the range of contemporary designed apartments from architects Simpson Haugh.
Held annually to highlight work undertaken by the homebuilding sector, the Housebuilder Awards are a key date in the calendar for the residential construction industry. Due to ongoing lockdown restrictions across the UK, the 2020 awards were held virtually with an online ceremony on 3rd December.
Smith’s Dock fought off strong competition in a busy category to be awarded Regeneration Initiative of the year by a team of judges who understood the positive impact the residential scheme of popular townhouses and apartments has had on the wider area.
Nigel Brewer on behalf of the JV commented: “For Smith’s Dock to be recognised for its regeneration of the former Smith’s Dock shipyard into a contemporary and forward-thinking residential community is testament to the talented construction and design professionals who worked so hard to make this scheme a success. It is a landmark development for the local community and one which has rewritten the rules on residential design for this part of North Tyneside. We are delighted to see this being recognised nationally.”
Guy Ackernley on behalf of the JV also commented: “With phase one complete and residents settled into their new homes, the waterfront community at Smith’s Dock is really thriving. This is a development which has created new opportunities for the North Shields Fish Quay and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the judges and look forward to seeing what the future holds for this exciting riverside scheme.”
