Stephenson STUDIO announced as Brownsfield Mill architect
Award winning regeneration company Urban Splash and partner Town Centre Securities have announced Stephenson STUDIO will design the 45,000 sq ft Brownsfield Mill development in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
Manchester based Stephenson, which is headed up by eminent architect and former RIBA North West Chair Roger Stephenson, will now work with the developers to transform the Victorian Mill – one of the last untouched, canalside mills in Manchester. Together, they will create some of the city’s most spectacular lofts, with homes expected to be up to 4,000 sq ft in size across entire floorplates.
It is the fourth time Urban Splash will have worked with the architect, with past projects including Chorlton Park and Smithfield Building. Roger Stephenson said: “We are delighted to be undertaking these designs and working on one of Manchester’s last untouched mills which is cherished by many. We understand how Urban Splash work and will honour their distinct approach of retaining and enhancing as many of the original features as we can.”
Stephenson’s work in the immediate area includes the designs for Finlay’s Warehouse on Dale Street; a similar proposition, the converted mill sold out within ten minutes of launching for sale, with buyers paying deposits just to view the properties.
Urban Splash is confident of a similar outcome at Brownsfield Mill; its own experience in the area spans two-decades with the company creating some of the first ever loft apartments in the Northern Quarter at Smithfield Building: “Brownsfield is very much the aesthetic of an Urban Splash building,” added Tom Bloxham MBE, Chairman at Urban Splash.
“It is a classic Victorian mill with red brick, timber and big windows – the perfect setting for us as we take one of the last unconverted mills of Manchester and create some of the biggest lofts the city has ever seen. I can’t wait for us to progress designs and reveal them in the near future.”
Brownsfield Mill forms part of Town Centre Securities’ wider regeneration framework for their Piccadilly Basin estate. Town Centre Securities are delighted to be working with Urban Splash as developers.
The team behind Brownsfield now includes Stephenson STUDIO as well as Civic Engineers and environmental engineers Max Fordham.
