Year in review 2024

US24for24

As 2024 comes to a close, we’ve collated 24 stories from across the year highlighting the projects, plans and placemaking we’ve been working on.

We’re celebrating our standout achievements from across the year – namely Park Hill receiving its second Stirling Prize nomination, our vision for City on the Beach in Swansea and looking back at what to we’ve got up to both in and out of the office.

Read on below to read the full set of stories, from our ‘Outstanding Contribution’ accolade awarded to us by Architecture Today to new canalside homes at Port Loop and everything in between.

A huge thank you to everyone who has worked alongside and supported us as we continue to bring new buildings, places and neighbourhoods to life – we hope you have a fantastic Christmas and a very happy New Year. Here’s to 2025!

Streets in the Sky

Twenty years in the making, Park Hill has been a major part of the Urban Splash story and this year Phase 2 was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, making it the only building to have been shortlisted twice.

Putting Park Hill's journey into words

Our Director of the Future, Suzy Jones, has been working with the World Economic Forum (WEF) this year, attending the Baukultur Alliance in Geneva. Delegates discussed the urgent climate crisis and how leaders with influence on the future of the built environment should respond.

Technology Vs. Culture

We've been working with the talented Abigail Carpe, founder at a-nd design, on a newly furnished show office at Vanilla Factory in Liverpool. Abigail has transformed the blank canvas into key zones to show how we can deliver a bespoke workspace for each customer.

LED-ing the way for building design

Lighting the way for how ambitious building refurbishments should be done, we recently drafted in designer and engineer, Ben Rousseau, to add a creative LED twist to the Waulk Mill entrance in Manchester. The installation has totally transformed the space and looks great from all angles - if we do say so ourselves!

A mesmerising installation

This year, our People team launched our in-house development programme, designed to give our people managers and wider colleagues a solid foundation for their career with US. It's been a big success, giving people the tools, knowledge and skills to reach their full potential.

In 2024, we've welcomed nine new team members across our Commercial, Residential, Development and Central Services departments with each new colleague supporting our work in creating new neighbourhoods across the country.

Canalside homes at Port Loop

Mansion House is our most recent addition to Port Loop - spacious, canalside apartments designed by shedkm. This year, we've continued our partnership with Places for People, worked with San Stae on the interior design to open the doors to our first show apartment at the development and much more.

An icon reborn

Our newest project Cole Brothers truly is one of Sheffield's best-loved stories. Now another chapter is about to be written as we look to restore this local icon to its rightful place as a centrepiece of city life.

After spending years captivated by the building, Kath traded her home in London for an apartment at Park Hill, instantly falling in love with the Brutalist beauty and all it has to offer from her balcony overlooking the grounds to drinks on her doorstep at The Pearl.

As we gear up for a new era of Urban Splash neighbourhoods, our team have been engaging with local communities to share our vision in person and online, generating feedback to make sure our plans align with the communities we serve.

A lasting legacy in the community

From UKREiiF to Housing Today, our colleagues have spent the year booking out their calendars to share our story with various audiences, reflecting on all we've done so far and all we've got planned.

An extraordinary organisation requires an extraordinary headquarters and Boat Shed in Exchange Quay is just the place for SevenThreeOne. It 'just made sense' for the pair to anchor their business at one of our sites.

New Exec Board, Same Bold Vision

Led by our CEO, Julian Curnuck, we've formed a new Executive Board of six colleagues to drive forward our mission to use great design to "leave this place not less but greater, better and more beautiful than it was left to us."

In October, we spent the day with delegates at the Academy of Urbanism conference, with our Development Manager, Joe Woolley, leading a tour of Ancoats and New Islington before we returned to The Alan to see our Director of the Future, Suzy Jones, speak on a panel.

Creating better places

From fire and ice with Hálogi to the much-anticipated News Café, Royal William Yard is buzzing with activity and opportunity. Not to mention, Melville has been awarded Excellence in Planning for Heritage and Culture at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) awards.

"Just Generic Northern"

Trending, tagging and driving traffic are all in a day's work for our social team, generating over one million impressions on our channels this year. You can't please everyone though, especially when debating Yorkshire slang!

There's nothing like a positive customer review to signify a job well done and our colleagues haven't been short on kind words from our customers in 2024. Shout out to everyone who has gone the extra mile for our customers this year. Keep it up, team!

From helping customers buy or rent to handling maintenance, property management, and more, our 18-strong Residential team manage our expansive portfolio ensuring each US customer has a great experience.

Ensuring architects are at the forefront of transformation

RIBA President, Muyiwa Oki, shares our vision to reuse buildings and input great design to meet the needs of the next generation and beyond. Muyiwa shares his standout architectural examples with us, including Malmö's Western Harbour area, as we look to our European counterparts for inspiration.

Pushing boundaries

It's been a busy year for development - we've consulted with thousands of people across the country and had lots of planning applications approved. 2025 has plenty in the pipeline - we can't wait to get cracking.

A new year - A host of new places

All work and no play makes for a very dull day. This year our colleagues haven't just got the job done, they have socialised, collaborated, played, learnt, got married, slept out for charity and had lots of fun. Same again next year?

That’s a wrap on 2024…

Join us again in the new year as we continue to create places for people to live, work and play.
